The Aquarius Centre is helping to make smoking history!

Greater Manchester has the aim to become the first city region in Europe to make smoking history.

To do this we need to reduce smoking prevalence at a pace and scale greater than anywhere has done before.

Why do we need to make smoking history?

The impact smoking has on smokers and their families is devastating. In Greater Manchester alone 4,500 adults will die each year from smoking related causes, and nearly 5,700 children in Greater Manchester start smoking every year.

Meanwhile, the tobacco industry makes more money than Coca Cola, Disney, Google, McDonalds and FedEx put together, profiting from sales of a product that kills 1 in 2 long-term users.

Making smoking history will improve the health, wealth and wellbeing of the 2.8 million people who live and work in Greater Manchester.

How do we make smoking history?

For many people, smoking is a chronic and relapsing addiction which generally begins in childhood. Smokers want and need support to quit. Greater Manchester's 'You Can' stop smoking campaign aims to help the 6 in 10 smokers who want to quit.

Smokefree events and spaces help de-normalise smoking and protect children and young people from smoking behaviour and the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. Fewer adults smoking means fewer children starting. Less smoking in public places means cleaner, greener spaces for us all to enjoy.

What’s happened so far?

Amazing things have happened so far. In 2016, there were almost 400,000 smokers in Greater Manchester. In 2018 there were 46,500 fewer smokers, and the percentage of people who smoke in Greater Manchester is falling twice as fast as the England national rate.

We also have more smokefree spaces popping up and smokefree events being organised, and many people are signing up to become History Makers.

Who’s behind it?
